Convert HEIC to JPG
What is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) has been the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. It stores photos at roughly half the size of JPG at comparable quality — but many programs, websites, and Windows PCs don't open it without extra steps.
Why doesn't ConverterFleet offer a HEIC converter?
Reading a HEIC file directly in the browser essentially requires one library: libheif (with libde265 as the decoder). Both are LGPL-licensed. Every component under a license like MPL 2.0 or LGPL goes through an individual review before we add it — for libheif, that review has so far come back negative. Rather than ship a tool we'd have to remove again for license reasons, we'd rather be upfront and show you a quick, working path instead. See our licenses page for more on how we handle licensing.
iPhone: save photos as JPG directly
The fastest fix is to stop your iPhone from saving new photos as HEIC in the first place:
- Open Settings → Camera → Formats.
- Under “Capture Photos”, choose “Most Compatible” instead of “High Efficiency”.
- From now on, the Camera app saves new photos directly as JPG — no conversion needed.
macOS: convert with the Preview app
For HEIC photos you already have on a Mac, the built-in Preview app is enough:
- Open the photo in Preview (double-click, or right-click → Open With → Preview).
- From the menu, choose File → Export.
- Pick “JPEG” as the file format and set the quality.
- Click “Save” — you now have a JPG file.
Windows: convert with the Photos app
Windows 10/11 can open HEIC files with the pre-installed Photos app and re-save them as JPG (you may need to install the free “HEIF Image Extensions” from the Microsoft Store once):
- Double-click the HEIC file to open it in the Photos app.
- Click the three dots (More options) in the top right → “Save as”.
- Choose “JPEG” as the file type and pick a location.
- Click “Save” — the JPG file now sits next to the original.
